I live in scenic Warwick, Massachusetts, where I chair the Board of Selectmen. During much of the winter I spend time in the town where I grew up, Claremore, Oklahoma. Married and the mother of two while still a Harvard undergraduate (B.A. '61), I have had many different occupations, but most of them have had two things in common—writing and editing—talents I first exercised professionally as research assistant to Hungarian Nobel Prizewinner (in medicine) Georg von Békésy. Lately I've been working on history and genealogy, particularly those of the Cherokee side of my family. In connection with this, I was recently asked to give a talk at the Cherokee Women's Pocahontas Club in Claremore. For many years I tutored high school students in English, Mathematics and the sciences, maintaining offices in Northfield, Massachusetts and at my home. I love hearing from former students! plemon@fugue.comSome time ago I collaborated with my late mother, Carrie Barefoot Dickerson, on a memoir of her 9-year legal battle to prevent the building of a nuclear power plant near Claremore. It's still available through third party sellers at Amazon.com, and I have a few unread copies for sale at $25 from the address below. A tax-deductible† $100 donation to the Carrie Dickerson Foundation (in care of the address below) accompanied by a request for a copy will be honored as long as they last! I am also planning to publish a paperback edition through Lulu.com later this year. (Click on the book cover for more information) Last year we collaborated on another book, a children's history of an alternative energy source, entitled Harvesting the Wind. The standard edition (printed on #67 cover stock made from recycled post-consumer paper) is available for $25; the library edition (printed on HP ToughPaper®) costs $34, and shipping and handling will be absorbed by the author and illustrator. A few irregular copies (with all the information—and a little more—are available for classroom use by request, their cost subsidized by the Carrie Dickerson Foundation. While funding permits, the Foundation will also purchase copies to be sent to individuals and institutions that are able and interested in getting information about alternate energy to the public. Suggestions are welcome. Checks should be made out to "The Wind Book," and orders (including recipients' mailing addresses) sent to: The Wind Book (Click on the book cover for more information) †The Carrie Dickerson Foundation is an IRS-approved 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. By IRS rules, the cost of a premium is not deductible, so the deductible amount for a $100 donation accompanying such a request would be $75. |
